Katsuren Castle Ruins

Katsuren Castle was constructed in the 13th to 14th Century A.D.  It was owned by the powerful Aji (Lord) of Katsuren but was destroyed by the army of the Kingdom of Ryukyu in 1458.  The castle has long been a center for practice of the old Ryukyuan religion and a shrine survives to this day within the innermost bailey dedicated to Kobazukasa.  Testifying to the economic success of Okinawa during its golden age, precious porcelain from Korea, Japan, and China have been excavated at this site, along with Roman and Ottoman coinage.

The flat stones laid into the ground generally indicate where supporting beams once stood, providing an idea of how large a structure once stood upon this level of Katsuren Castle.

Yes . . . that's the lower bailey of the castle way down there!
